Bannon, Class of 1976 |

Joined
the USAF in January of 1978 and worked in the procurement
field during my career. My first duty station was
Andrews AFB, Maryland (1978 -1981) where I provided
support for the 89 MAW (Air Force One), the Pentagon,
HQ Air Force Systems Command, and HQ Military Airlift
Command. Tour highlight was being a part of the
Inauguration of Ronald Regean. Left Andrews for
an duty at Williams AFB, AZ (1981-1986). Our mission
at Williams AFB was to provide basic flight instruction
for pilots. I was amazed at how many people from
Ohio I met there. Andersen AFB, Guam (1986-1990).
The only overseas SAC base at the time. The best
part of this assignment was being deployed to Darwin
Australia on routine bomber deployments for training
and for Operation "Pitch Black". Arrived
at Mac Dill AFB in Tampa, FL in September 1990.
At the time Mac Dill provided graduate pilot training
in the F-16 Falcon. Half the base was deployed in
support of Desert Shield. Mac Dill also hosts the
two Unified Commands of Special Operations Command
and US Central Command. Deployed to Saudi a Arabia
in support of Desert Storm. I took early retirement
in 1995 as part of the downsizing of the military.
I'm currently the Manager of Procurement and Contracts
for the Central Florida Regional Transportation
Authority (LYNX) in Orlando Florida. If you're ever
down this way, drop a line. |

Captain
John R. Stegmiller, CEC, USNR (Ret.). I have retired
(from the Navy, but not from working) after serving
nearly 30 years in the Navy CEC (Civil Engineer
Corps). Upon receiving my commission from The President,
I served in Gulfport, Mississippi, from which I
deployed to Vietnam. We built bridges working 24/7
and under lights at night in the war zone. We did
civic action projects such as building schools and
such for local villages. Next, I served in Norfolk,
VA, on the staff of the NATO Admiral during the
secret construction of Diego Garcia Naval Base strategically
located in the Indian Ocean. All residents were
moved off the island, a full-service base was built
including an airport, a hospital, and a deep water
harbor for carriers. After transferring from active
duty to reserve duty, I was privileged to be selected
by the following three Reserve Admirals to serve
on their personal staffs. I traveled all over the
country and abroad on behalf of the Admirals inspecting
facilities and construction equipment, recommending
and supervising upgrades to same. One assignment
was to design detailed contingency mobilization
plans for all the construction personnel and equipment
in the Atlantic Fleet to mobilize for various proposed
conflicts. We also did domestic civic projects such
as building a baseball field in what was originally
a ravine in an underserved community in Rhode Island.
The Secretary of the Navy flew in by helo and landed
on the field to commission it. I was honored to
work with many fine professionals during my Navy
career. We are honored that our son, George, is
serving our country as a Captain in the Marines.
The Captain rank is different in the two services.
A Navy Captain is equal to a Marine Colonel. The
enlisted men and women serving in the construction
forces of the Navy are known as the Seabees.
