| GOLD,
BLACK ... AND GREEN! |
Welcome
to the first edition of the Upper Arlington Alumni Association's
online newsletter! As we close out a challenging year
for most not-for-profit organizations and move into 2010,
we are excited to announce that we have spent a great
deal of time and effort researching ways to best use our
resources to communicate regularly with our alums. With
most of the technology already in place, we worked to
find a way to use that infrastructure so that we can offer
a monthly, rather than semi-annual, newsletter. It is
our hope that more frequent and timely news will keep
you well-connected and informed of the happenings at your
alma mater and with your classmates. BONUS! Not only does
it provide you with more contact, but also it is kind
to our environment and it helps our budget. This will
allow us to use your dues for better purposes. Please
encourage your classmates to register
their email addresses so that they may be connected
through Bearalums.com. It is our hope that we will be
able to create the largest high school alumni association
in the country! WE ARE UA!

NEWS: |
|
Thanks
so much to the great number of you who pay dues
to the UAAA. These dues are critical to the support
of our organization. Many alums think that funding for
the Alumni Association comes from the school district.
WRONG! We are completely self-sustaining and need these
dues in order to maintain our database of nearly 30,000
graduates and to pay the costs of running our Web site,
Bearalums.com.
We are proud that we do not require a login and password
for our Web site and we do not restrict it to dues-paying
members. However, over the past few years, we have seen
our number of dues-paying members decline. We need YOU!
Our tax-deductible dues are modest, so it is our goal
to increase membership, and we hope that we can count
on you. Membership in UAAA is available at four levels:
| Annual |
$15
/ year |
| Reunion
- 5 years |
$60
(One year free!) |
| Life |
$250:
one-time! |
| Golden
Bear |
$500:
one-time! |
|
DUES
ARE TAX-DEDUCTIBLE!
|
|
| NEW
THIS YEAR: We are offering a payment
plan for the Life
and Golden
Bear Membership levels! You may commit
to the level you wish and pay it off over
10 months; they don't even need to be consecutive
months. We truly hope that you will help us
out at whatever level is comfortable for you,
and we thank you for your support AT ANY
LEVEL! |

PUBLIC LIBRARY: A GOOD FRIEND OF THE UAAA - NORWESTERS
ARE ONLINE NOW! |
For
the past year, the dedicated staff at the Upper
Arlington Public Library have spent hundreds of hours
digitizing more than 20,000 pages of Norwesters
from 1923 - 1999. Our yearbooks are now archived at the
library and are available online at UAArchives.org.
Enjoy years of Norwesters and other historical
UA publications and documents. For those of you who have
lost your yearbooks, you now have the library to thank
for giving you back a piece of your history! Be prepared:
once you log on, you can get lost in these fantastic books,
and time will fly by! We are deeply indebted to the UA
Library for this gift of time and resources, and we extend
to them our sincere thanks.

INTERNET RADIO: STAY CONNECTED FROM NEAR OR FAR! |
|
Local
resident Mike Holman recently launched an Internet
radio station devoted to the City of Upper Arlington.
WUAR
Radio is a full service station featuring music,
news, weather and sports. They also broadcast a high
school game of the week, rotating between UAHS and Bishop
Watterson. WUAR shows are also available for replay
from the station Archives section.
WUAR
presents a weekly show on Thursday at 10:00 am
called "The Upper Arlington Chamber of Commerce Talk
at Ten." Past broadcasts are available on the WUAR Archives.
Another show that would be of interest to UA alums is
the "City Insight Show" with the City of UA. This program
airs at 10:00 am on the first Friday of each month
and is replayed at 7:00 pm on the first Sunday of each
month, and past broadcasts are available in the Archives.

WUAR Radio at UpperArlington Radio.com.

| 4TH
OF JULY, 2010 - IMPORTANT INFORMATION |
|
|
Did
you graduate in a year ending with a "0" or a "5"? If
so, you will be having a reunion this summer. 2010 is
a year in which the 4th of July falls on Sunday, so
the UA Civic Association, the great organization who
puts on all the festivities, has decided to hold the
parade and fireworks on SATURDAY,
JULY 3. Red White & Boom will be held
on Friday, July 2, so if you are making travel arrangements,
please plan accordingly. Check our
Reunions 2010 page for all details about
the 2010 UAHS class reunions.
Whether
you have a reunion or not this summer, please plan to
join everyone UNDER THE TENT at the 2010
UAAA BLOCK PARTY. This year, as always the
Block Party will take place right after the UA parade
behind Barrington Elementary School. And again, John
Kost, Class of 1974, of ReMax
Premier Choice Real Estate, will be sponsoring this
fun event for us. John has generously underwritten the
entire Black Party for TEN YEARS, making him
the single largest contributor to the UA Alumni Assocation.
We thank John for his continuing dedication to UAAA!
See
our photo galleries from Block Parties since 2001.

| REMEMBERING
OUR VETS: VETERANS DAY 2009 |
Annually,
students at both Hastings and Jones Middle Schools honor
Central Ohio vets on Veterans Day. While the actual programs
are different, they both recognize veterans of several
wars and conflicts, and many UA alums are included in
these groups. It is nice to know that our students are
made aware of the sacrifices that these dedicated men
and woman have made for our country, and that they play
a part in honoring them for this service. Did you know
that Bearalums.com has a Military
Alums page, where alums who are currently serving
in the Armed Forces have posted information about where
they are and how they can be reached? Please take a moment
and see how many of your fellow alums are serving the
United States, and send
them a message of support!

NOTE ABOUT BEARALUMS.COM: HOW DOES THIS WORK, ANYWAY? |
|
Because
we respect our alums' privacy, we list names and email
addresses on Bearalums.com ONLY if they are personally
submitted by the alum. When we started Bearalums.com
in 2000, we had approximately 320 email addresses in
our database; we currently have more than 12,000
alums' email addresses listed on Bearalums.com!
If
you are not listed on your class page but wish to be,
please
send in your information. If you notice that one
of your classmates isn't listed, please contact that
person and ask them to visit Bearalums.com and personally
submit his or her information. And if you see someone's
name on the Lost list at the bottom of each class page,
and you know his or her location, please let us know,
or contact that classmate and ask him or her to contact
UAAA.
Our
goal is to maintain the most complete and accurate database
that we possibly can. We are asking for your help! And
thank you to those of you who have helped us through
your membership
dues; your financial help allows us to provide the
ongoing hosting and maintenance fees of our Web site.
