| THIS
MONTH'S EDITION OF TRADITIONS BEGINS WITH ... A
POP QUIZ! |
|
Close your eyes, think back to your days at Upper Arlington
High School, and name the first adult at the school who
comes to mind. Next, decide why did THIS person pop into
your head? Were they fun? Did they have an impact on your
life? Did they make your life miserable at the time but
now you appreciate what they taught you? Write down their
name and continue to read ...
Did
you know that Upper Arlington High School has an Educators
Hall of Fame? Well, we do! In 2005, UAHS Principal
Kip Greenhill, along with the UAHS faculty, established
the UAHS Educators Hall of Fame to honor retired UAHS
teachers, coaches and administrators for their lasting
influence on students and fellow teachers. "It
is a way to recognize educators who have made this school
what it is," Greenhill said. Not limited to teachers,
he added, "Honorees could be a coach, or could
be an administrator."
The
first class of honorees was inducted in the fall of
2005 and included Robert Ginther, Lester Jackson,
Richard Larkin, Vera K. Randall, and Charles
Will. In the fall of 2007, the second group of honorees
included Dr. James Allen, Dr. Shirley Behnke, Walter
Heischman, Ellis Lutz, David Shelby, and Pat
Stewart were inducted.
Kip
Greenhill is now accepting nominations for the next
class, who will be inducted this fall. To be eligible
for consideration, a nominee must have worked at the
high school (sorry, we don't have a Hall of Fame for
the other schools yet) and have been retired for more
than five years. To nominate someone who made a difference
in your life, simply print
the nomination form, complete it and send it to:
Mr.
Kip Greenhill, Principal
Educators Hall of Fame
1650 Ridgeview Road
Columbus, OH 43221
The
deadline for nominations is April 15, 2010.
As nominations come in, we will post the list on our
website and give other alums the opportunity to post
comments of support, so even if you don't choose to
nominate someone, please check back to see who is out
there and comment if you wish.
Print
the form here.

OF JULY, 2010 - IMPORTANT INFORMATION |
|
|
Whether
or not you have a reunion this summer, please plan to
join everyone UNDER THE TENT at the 2010
UAAA BLOCK PARTY. This year, as always the
Block Party will take place right after the UA parade
behind Barrington Elementary School. And again, John
Kost, Class of 1974, of ReMax
Premier Choice Real Estate, will be sponsoring this
fun event for us. John has generously underwritten the
entire Black Party for TEN CONSECUTIVE YEARS,
making him the single largest contributor to the UA
Alumni Assocation. We thank John for his continuing
dedication to UAAA! See

PUBLIC LIBRARY ARCHIVES JOINS THE COMMONS ON FLICKR |
| We
are pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for the
UA community! The UA
Archives initiative has been selected as one of only
60 worldwide participants to join The
Commons on Flickr. They will be among some impressive
company, as this group includes the Library of Congress,
the U.S. National Archives, the Smithsonian Institution,
and the New York Public Library -- as well as several
overseas national heritage institutions.
What
is The Commons? Flickr Commons was launched in 2008
as a partnership between the Library of Congress and
Flickr. The two main purposes of the project are to
showcase the world's publicly-held historical images
and to provide a forum for the general public to participate
in the description of those images.
What
does this mean to UA? Our community's historical
photographs will receive international exposure as examples
of Midwestern suburban daily life in the early 1900s.
The UAPL will also
be inviting the public to help describe these images.
Members of the Upper Arlington community as well as
a broader group of worldwide users will be able to contribute
comments or tags if they wish to share information about
the photographs. Information obtained from these comments
may help to enhance information about people, locations,
architectural details, and activities depicted in the
images.
THIS
IS FUN! The UA Archives will be added to
The Commons in the coming months. In the meantime, you
can see
the UA Archives photostream as it is being assembled
on Flickr.

FROM THE UAHS VOCAL MUSIC DEPARTMENT |
|
The
UAHS Vocal Music Department has traditionally
presented a spring musical as well as a fall variety
show. Directed by Mr. Eric Kauffman, the Spring
2008 musical, "Jekyll & Hyde",
was honored in the national publication, USA Today
Weekend, as a "2008 Showstopper Runner-up,"
making this performance one of the top five high
school musical productions in the country! This
is quite impressive for an entire production fueled
by the efforts of students, parents, and other volunteers.
Read
the article from USA Today Weekend here.
Equally
impressive is the fact that through its 2008 Fall Follies
variety show performances, the Vocal Music Department
raised money for the Ohio State School for the Blind's
Music Department. This school has the only Blind Marching
Band in the country and they performed at this year's
Rose Bowl Parade. The students in the Vocal Music Department
watched the parade with pride, knowing that they played
a part in making this happen.
In
February, for the first time in UAHS history, the Vocal
Music Department presented "West Side Story"
to the delight of their audiences. The talent that dwells
at UAHS is quite remarkable, and once again the students
and accompanying orchestra put on a fantastic performance.
BRAVO!

follow the happenings of the Vocal Music Department,

and their Facebook
page.

| CAN
YOU HELP? |
|
It
is always a sad day when the alumni office learns of
an alum's passing. We are a large group - 29,000+ graduates
of our alma mater - yet we share a long and loving bond.
In February, we learned of two passings that span three
generations and two families of Golden Bears, and we
felt it appropriate to look to our Golden Bear Family
for support in light of these tragic circumstances.
Martin
Shimp '81 (son of Peggy Willman Shimp '50 and
Bill Shimp '50, brother of Bill, Dan, Andy,
and Fred) and Carolyn Gyuro Shimp '82
(sister of Susan, Tom and Bob) were married
and had three children who are currently students at
Jones and Tremont.
Carolyn
passed away in July after a courageous battle with cancer.
Tragically, Martin died suddenly in February, leaving
behind their loving families and three young children.
If
you would like to help the family, you are welcome to
make a donation in Carolyn and Martin's memory to the
Shimp Family Educational Fund, c/o The Arlington
Bank, 2130 Tremont Center, Columbus, OH 43221. We offer
our deepest condolences to the Gyuro and Shimp families.

NEWS: |
|
Thanks
so much to all of you who pay dues
to the UAAA. These dues are critical to the support
of our organization. Many alums think that funding for
the Alumni Association comes from the school district.
WRONG! We are completely self-sustaining and need these
dues in order to maintain our database of nearly 30,000
graduates and to pay the costs of running our Web site,
Bearalums.com.
We are proud that we do not require a login and password
for our Web site and we do not restrict it to dues-paying
members. However, over the past few years, we have seen
our number of dues-paying members decline. We need YOU!
Our tax-deductible dues are modest, so it is our goal
to increase membership, and we hope that we can count
on you. Membership in UAAA is available at four levels:
|
| Annual |
$15
/ year |
| Reunion
- 5 years |
$60
(One year free!) |
| Life |
$250:

NOTE ABOUT BEARALUMS.COM: HOW DOES THIS WORK, ANYWAY? |
|
Because
we respect our alums' privacy, we list names and email
addresses on Bearalums.com ONLY if they are personally
submitted by the alum. When we started Bearalums.com
in 2000, we had approximately 320 email addresses in
our database; we currently have more than 12,000
alums' email addresses listed on Bearalums.com!
If
you are not listed on your class page but wish to be,
please
send in your information. If you notice that one
of your classmates isn't listed, please contact that
person and ask them to visit Bearalums.com and personally
submit his or her information. And if you see someone's
name on the Lost list at the bottom of each class page,
and you know his or her location, please let us know,
or contact that classmate and ask him or her to contact
UAAA.
Our
goal is to maintain the most complete and accurate database
that we possibly can. We are asking for your help! And
thank you to those of you who have helped us through
your membership
dues; your financial help allows us to provide the
ongoing hosting and maintenance fees of our Web site.
