1968 STATE CHAMPION FOOTBALL TEAM REUNION

The 1968 State Championship Golden Bear Football Team recently held its 50-year reunion.

Players, coaches, cheerleaders, and family and friends gathered at Raymond Memorial Golf Club for a reunion dinner on Thursday, September 6. Following dinner, Brad Frick '66 presented a documentary that he created, highlighting the 1968 football season and featuring actual game footage and interviews with players and coaches. The documentary offers a unique perspective on, and reflection of, this very special group of young men whose sportsmanship, camaraderie, and bond that not only has lasted, but also has strengthened during the fifty years since they walked off the field together for the last time.

During the afternoon of Friday, September 7, they visited the Jones stadium, where they had played many of their high school games, and gathered in the locker room for a meaningful memorial service honoring the coaches and players who are no longer with us, including Head Coach Marv Moorehead, who was a lifelong inspriation to all the players. They reminisced, shared stories, and honored those individuals.

The 1968 players then met at the UAHS stadium on Friday evening and formed a tunnel for the 2018 players as they ran onto the field, and at half-time, the 1968 teammates took the field to be recognized and honored.

To commemorate the reunion of these outstanding football players and lifelong friends, we have created a Football page on the UA69.com website, indexing links to three collections of photos and videos honoring the 1968 team:

1. A photo slideshow of more than 200 pictures commemorating the 50-year reunion;

2. Brad Frick's documentary film (total of three hours, separated into 13 sections);

3.ABC6/Fox TV evening news segment covering the reunion and featuring reporter and UAHS alumnus Clay Hall '76.

JOHN VAUGHN '84 PILOTS MILITARY VESSEL LST 325

From The Galena Gazette, Galena IL:

John Vaughn, UAHS 1984, loves being a riverboat pilot. It's all that he's wanted to do since he was a kid. He says piloting a riverboat is like playing with a big toy. Last summer, he played with a big toy, really big toy - 328 feet long. And this toy had guns although they were not comobat-ready.

Vaughn spent six days as a volunteer pilot guiding LST 325 along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers from its home base in Evansville, Indiana to Dubuque, Iowa, where the boat was docked and available for tours during the summer.

John's real job is a pilot on the Marquette Transportation Company's Theresa L. Wood, pushing barges on the lower Mississippi River.

Read the article and see photos of John's experience.
